SOMA Recap
SOMA 07 Post Race Recap.
Race: Soma 07
Date: 10/28/07
Prerace: Took in 800 calories of Infinit, mistake number 1!!! After thinking about my race and season I can go back to almost every race and have the same issue. I think what was happening is the Infinit has almost 400mg of sodium, to get to calories prerace I am taking in almost 1000mg, way too much!! I plan on taking carbo-pro with Gatorade endurance to get the calories pre-race, that will only about to 400mg total. I can not wait to test this out next year.
Swim: 36:25. I was hoping that my swim time would have been faster then this. I thought that I was swimming faster and that I navigated the course fairly well, although the back half of the course was very hard to see with the glare from the sun. When I got out of the water and looked at my watch, I though s***!
Bike: 2:23:46 Got on to the bike and I was feeling good after about 10 minutes once I got more blood into my legs. In the back of my mind I kept telling myself that I needed to make up time from the swim. I knew that my focus was going to get water in me then drink in some calories. I felt like I was flying the first lap. The second and third laps seemed to get progressively worse. I was taking in 2 water bottles a lap along with my calories and I could not get my heart rate up. It seemed as the harder I tried the lower it would go, and I was trying everything, spinning fast, hammering, nothing would work. The only thing that I could think was that I was dehydrated so I kept drinking more, and did not push as fast of pace the last lap. My hr went below 140 on the second lap then it dropped to below 130 on the second lap, my only thought once again negative was my bike time is going to suck!! (I was thinking 2:35-2:40) This whole time on the bike I felt like crap, just could not get out the power that I knew was capable of. I tried to just make it through and we will see what will happen on the run.
Run: 1:35.21 When I got off the bike I felt so bad, my only though was this is going to hurt! I remember being dizzy when I got off the bike and headed to rack my bike. I just kept telling myself to suffer through it and get in more fluids the first couple of miles and see what happens. I was taking water and Gatorade and walking through the aid stations to get in as much fluids as possible. I did not think that I could run so slow. My legs felt good, I just could not get them to turnover. I though to myself at one point this could get ugly. I decided that I needed to focus on hydrating the first lap and I might feel better, the only positive thought that I had was going back to my 12 mile training run and remembering that after mile 7 I felt great. So I kept telling myself to suffer through the first lap and you will feel better once you get to 7. I took in a GU just before the 3 mile mark. I walked every aid station on the first lap. This whole time wanting to stop to use the bathroom but I was afraid if I did I would never get going again, gi issues. Made it around and completed my first lap in :52 if I remember correctly, never did hit the lap button. Still did not feel good ran by everyone cheering for me and thinking can I stop now? I kept going to the next station where once again I got a lot of fluids and started to run. Some where between here and the bridge I started to feel better and my hr was going up, finally over 150. I just kept pushing my body as it was starting to work again. After two more aid stations I was flying, passing people that had passed me. I was sticking to the same plan water and Gatorade and a gu every 3. I was running, finally with 3 miles left I got my hr over 160! Finally, took long enough. I was catching everyone and making up ground at the out and back on everyone as well. I ran by Tim who just stopped and walked under the bridge and smacked him on the butt and said lets go buddy, passed him on the way back and he was cheering for me this time sitting on the edge of the river. I took off knowing that I needed to kick it into high gear for my losses earlier. On the final mile I passed Gerald who yelled to me to catch Nick Goodman as he was just in front, at this point I thought Nick from Durapulse he is pretty good, not that Nick, then 5 seconds later I could see the Durapulse uniform, time to go hunting, (this one is for Tim) within 2 min I was able to fly by him, when I did I saw the 29 on his leg and remembered that he was in my AG. Thought wow I must be flying, Nick is pretty good. On the last lap I caught every person that had passed me earlier, and believe me I remembered them all, took off for the finsh and hit the stop button 4:38 S***!! 18 minutes off from where I wanted to be.
Made my way over to the medical tent to get some Gatorade and sat down in the shade, drank some chicken broth, and relaxed in the shade, saw them post prelim results and I felt better the instant I saw my name as 3rd in my ag! Looked the the top 10 times and they were all 10 min slower, looks like I was not the only one that was suffering that day.
Then I was told that Tim came in by Peggy, thought wow he was able to recover quickly, then I saw him being carried and in some serious trouble, he was pulled of the course and thrown in the ambulance and getting an IV, he clearly suffered more then I did. Listening to my body I was able to make it to the finish line on my own, not in a golf cart.

Excellent job Ladies!!
Chris "Big Boy" Bowers took part in the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon. Chris had great fun and loved racing in the hot temperatures. I can not find the results or the pictures, there is a good chance that his agent had them removed if he did not win. But if any one finds them send me the link and I will add it! I do know that Chris did well and had a fast swim split, but that is about all the details that I know.
The end of the racing season is upon us so get signed up for those last races! SOMA, Las Vegas, and Dick Tomlin Spirit of Triathlon are 3 of the more popular ones. Sign up, go for a PR and end the season on a high note!!
For anyone that is interested we will be having another Bicycle Safety and Triathlon planning meeting Wednesday, 9/19 at 7pm this will be held in the Cerbat Room at the Wellness Center.

Half Ironmans
Chris Bowers and Tim McDonnell both completed half ironman distance races 2 weekends ago. Chris competed in the Vineman Half and Tim finished the Mountain Man Half.
I was there to watch Tim in Flagstaff, he sure was upbeat and positive when I spoke with and saw him. Due to the small amount of participants most of this race Tim was off on his own, nothing like going for a 13 mile run all by yourself after a long swim and ride. Tim hung in there and finished, he said that he had a blast!
Chris did a bigger race, the pros started at 6 and he had to wait till almost 8 to start due to the number of people that would be swimming in the river. He really hammered on the bike and he said that he paid for it on the run. Check our the photos!

Chances for Children Triathlon

Here is an excellent opportunity for a first time triathlon! I talked with Tim Bolen this morning and he still has spots open for this race! I am hoping that we can get a good showing from Kingman for this race. Hopefully the Dolphins don't have a swim meet so we can get some of the young talent there. It will be a good time and it is for a great cause.
Tim Bolen is responsible for the Spirit of Triathlon race here in Kingman in November, and if you have done that race you can rest assured that this one will be just as much fun!
Please check out the website for more information; the race is on Sunday July 29th.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I will be at the Dolphin Swim practice tomorrow to recruit and to answer any questions!

Oops!

Terry why is your seat stuck in the garage? At least when I did it I got a new bike! I think the seat needs to stay there for a while to serve as a reminder!
I would like to thank everyone that showed up for the ride on the 4th of July! We had a huge turnout, I need to get a hold of a picture so that I can count how many we had, I would guess 50+. A huge thanks to Bonnie for all her time and efforts to prepare the food for us and allowing us to meet at her house and use her pool as well. You rock Bonnie!!!
The Mountain Man Triathlon is coming up soon, July 22nd so sign up soon! I am hoping that we can have a rather large group there as our t-shirts will be done by then with the Kingman Tri Club logo on them. If anyone has any ideas in regards to a good quote to put on the back please let me know. Right now I am thinking about "The only limits are the limits you set upon yourself."
Also don't forget about the junior triathlon coming up on July 14th.
Hope to see everyone this weekend, we will be leaving at 6 to start our Saturday ride from Bicycle Outfitters.

4th of July Ride!!!

Just wanted to get it out there to let everyone know that we are going to be riding on the 4th of July. This is an old tradition that Bonnie Tomlin would like to start up again. We will be leaving from the Tomlin House and riding. When we return we will be enjoying a wonderful breakfast and snacks prepared while we were gone. There will be 2 groups that will be riding, the first will be doing a longer ride 25-40 miles at 7 and the second will be doing 10-15 miles and leaving at 7:15. This ride is for anyone and everyone!! WE NEED TO HAVE A HUGE GROUP!!!
IF you do not want to ride feel free to show up and help out with the preparation of the food and enjoy the festivities afterward. I know that I will be in the pool to cool off since it will be near 100! It promises to be a great time. If you have any questions ask them in the comments or ask if you see myself or Bonnie.

Track Workout!
What a great workout we had today! There were 6 people for the 2nd track workout, and a good workout it was. Chris, Zack, Tim, Kim, Ran and I all completed the work out. We did a mile warm up followed by 4 400's with 200 recovery in between, followed by 2 800's with 400 recovery, all at our individual T-pace. Everyone did great, just a warning, watch out for Zack he is going to be an animal! First track workout and he was running with me, not that I am that fast or anything, but watch out! Check out the file from my HRM below, 196 max on the last 800, in 2:37.
Hope to see everyone on Saturday for a training ride!~

More Group Workouts!
Last night we had our first Track workout!! Kim, Chris, and Tim all joined in the fun as we did our first weekly track workout! These are going to be held at 6:30 on Thursdays from now on. This will allow you to improve your speed and work on your form and efficeny. I am going to be taking video of everyone next week as I will from time to time so that they can see there running form. This can do wonders for some as they have no idea what there body is doing while they are running.
Saturday we will be meeting at Bicycle Outfitters at 6:00am for the start of our group ride. I am hoping to do a 3 mile TT which will allow everyone to get a benchmark for where they are at. This allows you to see how much better you are getting every other month as you continue to test yourself. I am hoping that there is a good size group so that we can all take part and encourage each other as we start to improve.
Train hard, rest Harder!

Deuces Wild and Weekly Events
Well it was a beautiful area for a triathlon in Show Low, AZ. The weather was great, too bad I wasn't!! I got a big fat DNF! Kimmy did good as she continued to improve. She drank more water this time, and is getting her running legs back under her. My running legs never showed up! My body had been fighting a virus for a couple of days and it was not meant to be. I will get up any pics later as they are available.
This week we will be having spin class at 6:30 on Tuesday. Last week we had 3 new quests that joined us. Saturday we will be having a group ride and there is a possibility that we will be doing a 3 mile time trial. This is a great opportunity to come out and test yourself. This is a race against yourself, no one else! This should be done about one every 2 or 3 months to gauge your process and set up your heart rate zones if your train with a HRM.
I hope to see everyone there, hope everyone has a great week!!
"The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare!"
Check out the video it is funny! I went through this on Saturday during my DNF! I think we have all been through this at one point or another. See how many other areas you can apply it to, especially at work!

Tempe Intl. Triathlon
Had a great weekend as 7 Kingman locals headed to Tempe to compete in the International triathlon. Among the top winners was Cody Thompson who took 1st in his age group. Kim had a successful race as she was able to run the whole way!! Chris Bowers improved upon his time from last year, nearly 15 minutes. Shawn Tausz even made it to the race, she did great now we just have to get her to do more! Zack Tomlin crawled out of bed and out from a rock to participate in his first competitive swim in over a year! This was his first open water swim, I watched from the shore as I could see Zack in 3rd place among the other relays. Tim McDonnell got in some short course speed as he prepares for his longer half Ironman in July. Christina Kraus even decided to jump in and enjoy the event. I felt great and had a good race, I was able to make up some time on the run and catch Tim Bolen who passed me on the bike. I had a negative split on the run as I ran 21:15 for the first 3 miles and finished with a 41:06 10K.Please see the attached links for pictures and times from the event. http://www.tucsonracing.com/results/TATres07.htm
We will be having a get together Sunday night for food and Drinks at Dan's. We are also planning on doing a group ride Monday morning. We will be meeting at Bicycle Outfitters at 6, so be there!!Monday, May 7, 2007
Weekend Update!!
What a great weekend it was in Kingman! Although the weather was not as warm as it should have been it was a great weekend for training and racing!
Saturday started with a large group ride a bicycle outfitters, 11 riders showed up to take to the roads. There were 3 different groups that headed out, one group went to Aztec loop. Cody and I rode to Oatman for a 63 mile ride, and the other group rode around town. All reports that I have heard indicated that everyone had a great ride!
On Sunday we had our first group ride with the up and coming Kingman talent! We met Jacob, Patrick, Tristan at the bike shop for an hour ride. Everyone was dressed to impress with Bicycle Outfitters jerseys! (there are more photos under the Picasa Link from the ride)

Everyone had stellar performances, and they all refused to surrender to El Travadore hill, Including Tristan who rode a tank up the hill!!! He is a machine, he rode a bike that weights nearly as much as he does. Anyone know where the kid can get a junior rode bike??? He deserves one after that! We are looking at having these younger riders join us about once a month or perhaps even more if we get more to join!
There was also some racing action this weekend as Chris Bowers AKA "Big Boy" took to the shores and streets of Mexico for the Rocky Point Triathlon. Below are the links to the results and a article that was published about the race. I will post the pictures once they are available so we can all see Big Boy bringing sexy back!!

Weekend Training!!
Had a great weekend of training and it was nice to be at home and relax! On Saturday I rode to Oatman and had a great ride! After talking with Tim Bolen about some of my nutrition and drinking habits it became apparent that I do not drink enough on the bike. I drank 9 water bottles on the ride! Normally I would have drank 3 or 4, what a huge difference!
There was also a group, (Kim, Ran, Vern, Ernie and Dwayne) that rode the Aztec loop. Ernie now knows how to fix a flat and change a tube thanks to Kim! They all had a good ride! Vern is getting a HRM so everyone better watch out for him in a couple of weeks!
Had a great run on Sunday ran for a hour at a good pace and pushed it for the last 3 miles, my last split was 5:54, now if I could just get my calfs to stop killing me the next day that would be great! Kim ran about 6 miles and she is still battling issues with her legs bothering her.
Ryan has started to put together his new ride (Trek Madone 5.2) and looks forward to making the maiden voyage in the near future! He better hurry or Shawn will be riding it for him!!
Cody will be in town this weekend and will be meeting us at 7am Saturday at Bicycle outfitters!
SEE YOU THERE!

RAGE in the Sage Triathlon
Well it was suppose to be a triathlon, but mother nature converted it to a duathlon after the swim bouys were blown away. With winds at 25 mph and gusting to 40mph, along with 200 first time triathletes the swim was cancelled.

Here is a link to the results:
Race photos: Kim 306, Dan 423, Chris 468, Ran if you browse through the lost and found you may find more pictures. Ran was so fast they could not see his number!!
